TIE Appointment Online in Spain: How to Book Your Cita Previa

Before anything else, this has a legal deadline. Article 209 of the Immigration Regulation calls the card both a right and a duty, and gives you one month to apply for it in person, counted from your entry into Spain or from the day your permit is granted or takes effect. Failing to do it falls under the sanctions regime of the Immigration Act. The month does not pause because the booking system has no slots, which is the whole problem this page is about.

Two appointments, not one

Most people are surprised to learn there are two separate steps, and they are booked separately.

The first is the toma de huellas, the fingerprinting appointment. This is the one everybody struggles to get. You bring your paperwork, they take your fingerprints, and they give you a receipt.

The second is collecting the card. Depending on the province you either book a second appointment or you simply turn up during opening hours once you are told the card has been printed. Nobody tells you which applies where, so ask when you attend the first one.

The same clock runs when you renew, so a renewal has its own appointment and its own month.

How to book a TIE appointment in Spain

You go to the official appointment portal, run by the Ministry for Territorial Policy, choose your province, and then choose the procedure. This is where most people fail: the entry you want is usually listed as toma de huellas, not as anything containing the word TIE. Choosing the wrong procedure gets you an appointment that the office will refuse to honour.

You then enter your NIE and passport details, pick a slot if one exists, and you get a confirmation with a code. Print it or save it. Turning up without it is treated as not turning up.

What to do when there are no TIE appointments available

This is the part nobody writes about honestly, so here it is.

Slots are released in batches. There is no published schedule, it varies by province, and in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Malaga a batch can be gone in the time it takes to fill in the form. Refreshing the page for an afternoon is a normal experience, not a sign that something is broken.

Three things that genuinely help:

• Try at different times of day rather than the same hour repeatedly, because release times move.
• Check neighbouring offices inside your own province, since some have far more capacity than the provincial capital.
• Have your details ready to paste, because the session times out while you are typing.

The appointment is issued free by the administration, which is why nobody should be selling you a slot on its own. There are people who do exactly that, and what they are selling is something they do not own.

What does take work is everything around the slot: gathering the padron and the rest of the paperwork, knowing which documents that particular office insists on, choosing the right procedure so the appointment is not rejected, and doing the booking as part of handling your file. That is legal work, and firms charge for it, ourselves included.

The difference is worth understanding before you pay anybody. Paying for help with the file is normal. Paying for the slot as if it were a product is not.

Which city you are in changes everything

Provinces are not equal. The same procedure that takes a fortnight in a quiet province can take two months in Madrid or Barcelona. If your padron is in a province with a busy office, that is the office you must use, so plan around it rather than hoping.

What to bring to your TIE appointment

• Your appointment confirmation
• Your passport, with a photocopy
• The paid fee receipt, tasa 790 form 012, paid before you attend
• A recent passport style photograph
• The resolution granting your permit

Bring originals and copies of everything. Offices differ on what they will accept, and being sent home over a missing photocopy costs you the whole appointment.

TIE photo requirements

The photograph is a small thing that sends people home. What the Ministry of the Interior actually asks for is short: a recent colour photograph, on a white background, in carnet size. The detail is in what carnet size means in practice.

• Size: the Spanish carnet standard is 26 mm wide by 32 mm high. It is smaller than the format used for many national passports, so a spare photo taken abroad for another document usually will not do.
• Background: plain white, evenly lit, no shadow behind your head, nothing else in frame.
• Your face: centred, looking straight at the camera, neutral expression with your mouth closed, head uncovered, eyes open and visible.
• Condition: recent and in colour, printed on photographic paper rather than at home on an inkjet.
• How many: bring three. Some offices ask for one, some for more, and carrying spares costs you nothing while being short costs you the appointment.

The safest option is a photo booth or a photography shop in Spain. Asking for a foto de carne gets you the right format without having to explain any of the above.

That distinction matters, because there are operations that do exactly the opposite, and they are the reason the system is under strain. If somebody offers you a slot as a product, without asking a single question about your case, you are not talking to a lawyer.

Can you do it yourself?

Yes, and plenty of people do. If you have the time, do it. We will still tell you which procedure to choose and what to bring. Where a lawyer earns their fee is on the file itself: the wrong procedure, a missing document or an expired certificate is what turns one appointment into three.
