How to Get Your Digital Certificate in Spain
Tired of waiting in lines at government offices? The Digital Certificate is your “skip-the-line” pass for Spanish bureaucracy.
If you live in Spain, you already know that paperwork can be overwhelming. From renewing your residency to paying taxes, almost every procedure requires an appointment (cita previa) that is often impossible to get.
However, there is a solution that immigration lawyers and savvy expats swear by: the Digital Certificate (Certificado Digital).
At MySpainVisa, we help hundreds of clients navigate the Spanish legal system every year. In this guide, we will show you exactly how to get a digital certificate in Spain step-by-step, ensuring you avoid the common technical errors that frustrate most applicants.
What is the Digital Certificate and Why Do You Need It?

A digital certificate (specifically the one issued by the FNMT – Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre) is a secure electronic file that you install on your web browser. It acts as your virtual ID card and digital signature.
Having this certificate allows you to identify yourself securely online before public administration bodies. It gives you the power to complete procedures from your laptop at any time of day, without stepping foot in an office.
What can you do with it?
Once installed, you can instantly handle tasks such as:
- Renewing your TIE or applying for residency permits.
- Filing and paying taxes (like the Modelo 100 or Modelo 720).
- Checking your Social Security status.
- Registering on the Padrón (in many town halls).
- Downloading your digital certificate Spain PDF history or work life report (Vida Laboral).
- Signing official PDF documents legally.
Requirements to Apply for the Digital Certificate
Before you start the application process, ensure you meet the following requirements:
- NIE Number: You must have a Foreigner Identity Number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero).
- Valid ID: Your Passport or valid EU Identity Card.
- A Computer: You cannot easily complete the apply for digital certificate Spain process on a mobile phone or tablet. You need a PC or Mac.
⚠️ The Golden Rule of the Digital Certificate
CRITICAL: The entire process—from the initial request to the final download—must be done on the SAME computer, with the SAME browser, and the SAME user account. Do not format your computer, update your browser, or clear your cache between steps, or the installation will fail.
How to Get the Digital Certificate: The Step-by-Step Process

There are two main ways to verify your identity: the Standard Method (In-Person) which is free, and the Video Identification Method (online) which costs a small fee but saves you a trip.
We will cover the technical setup first, which applies to both methods.
Step 1: Browser Configuration (Do Not Skip This!)
Most expats fail here because they try to use Safari, Edge, or a standard Chrome setup without preparation.
- Install the Right Browser: We highly recommend using Mozilla Firefox or an older version of Internet Explorer/Edge configured for compatibility. Chrome can work, but Firefox is generally more stable for FNMT certificates.
- Download the FNMT Configurator Software: You must install the “FNMT-RCM Configurator” (Configurador FNMT) before requesting anything. This software allows your browser to generate the keys correctly.
- Go to the official FNMT website > Certificados > Persona Física > Obtener Certificado Software > Configuración previa.
Step 2: Request the Application Code Online
Once your software is ready:
- Go to the FNMT website section: Solicitar Certificado.
- Enter your NIE, your first surname (as it appears on your NIE document), and your email address.
- Click the link to “sign” the application conditions.
- If your browser is configured correctly, a window will pop up asking to generate keys. Accept it.
- Check your email. You will receive an Application Code (Código de Solicitud). Save this code; it is the most important part of the process.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity
Now you need to prove to the government that you are who you say you are. You have two options:
Option A: The “Video Identification” Method (Recommended)
If you are outside of Spain or cannot get an appointment, this is a lifesaver.
- How it works: You use your mobile phone camera to show your ID and face to an agent via the official app.
- Cost: Approximately €2.99 + VAT (paid by credit card).
- Speed: Usually approved within 2-48 hours.
- Note: This option is available if you have a TIE or an EU Registration Certificate (Green Card).
Option B: The In-Person Method (Free)
If you prefer not to pay or have issues with the video app, you must visit an accreditation office.
- Where to go: Social Security offices (INSS) or Tax Agency offices (Hacienda/AEAT).
- Appointment: You must book a digital certificate Spain appointment (Cita Previa) in advance.
- What to bring: Your Application Code, your Passport, and your NIE document/TIE.
- Cost: Free.
Step 4: Download Your Digital Certificate
Approximately 1 hour after identifying yourself in person (or receiving the email confirmation from video ID), you can download your certificate.
- Go back to the same computer and browser you used in Step 1.
- Go to the “Download Certificate” (Descargar Certificado) section on the FNMT website.
- Enter your NIE, surname, and the same Application Code.
- Click download.
- Important: The browser will ask if you want to install the certificate. Click Yes.
Congratulations! You now have a working digital certificate.
Essential: How to Export and Backup Your Certificate
Once installed in your browser, you must create a backup copy. If your computer breaks, you will lose the certificate and have to start over.
How to export it (Firefox example):
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Certificates > View Certificates.
- Find your name under the “Your Certificates” tab.
- Select it and click Backup (or Export).
- Save the file (it will end in
.p12or.pfx) to a secure USB drive or cloud storage. - Create a password for the file when prompted. You will need this password to install it on other computers or your mobile phone.
Troubleshooting: Common Errors
“I get a security warning when accessing the FNMT site.” This is common. It usually means you haven’t installed the Root Certificates from FNMT. Go to the “Configuración Previa” page and look for the root certificate installer.
“My certificate works on Chrome but not Firefox.” Certificates are installed per browser. If you downloaded it on Chrome, it lives in Chrome (and Windows system store). Firefox has its own separate certificate store. You must “Import” your backup copy into Firefox manually.
“How do I use digital certificate Spain login?” When you go to a government site (like the Tax Office), choose the option “Access with Certificate/DNIe”. A pop-up window will appear asking you to select your name. Click it, and you’re in.
