Why we built it

Why we started this expat community in Spain

Many of the Americans and Brits who come to MySpainVisa to move to Spain keep asking us the same two things. How do I meet people? And how do I keep up with what is going on here?

So we built this community for them. When you land, you already know what is happening in Spain, and there are people like you to meet.

Where people moving to Spain with us come from

These are the English-speaking countries among the 10 most common nationalities of the people who have contacted MySpainVisa about a move since 2021, in their real order. They are people moving with us, not community members.

Source: MySpainVisa enquiry records, March 2021 to October 2026. We show the order only, never personal data.

By city

We will start meetups in the cities where most members live. These are the three cities people ask us about most.

Expat community in Barcelona

Barcelona province is home to 11,251 Americans, the second-largest US community in Spain, and 15,818 Britons. It is also the most expensive of the three: a 70 m² flat on a long-term lease costs about €2,120 a month.

Expat community in Madrid

Madrid province has more Americans than anywhere else in Spain: 14,240 on the latest census. A 70 m² flat costs about €1,810 a month on a long-term lease, and there are nonstop flights to the US all year.

Expat community in Valencia

After Barcelona and Madrid, Valencia is the city people ask us about most, and five years ago it barely featured. The province has 4,907 Americans, and a 70 m² flat costs about €1,289 a month, with a beach, a metro and fast trains to Madrid.

Questions

Expats in Spain: frequently asked questions

Is there an expat community in Spain?

Yes, and a large one. Britons cluster on the coast: Alicante province has 68,904 British nationals and Malaga province 49,298. Americans prefer big cities, with 14,240 in Madrid province and 11,251 in Barcelona province. Source: INE, Annual Population Census, 1 January 2025.

Where do most expats live in Spain?

Britons mostly live on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol, while Americans mostly choose Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Our guides to the best places to live in Spain and the best places to retire in Spain compare them city by city.

How do expats meet people in Spain?

Most start with language exchanges (intercambios), local clubs and expat groups online. We’re starting MySpainVisa Community meetups city by city, and members hear first when one comes to their area.

What is the cheapest city in Spain for expats?

By asking prices for a new lease, Cáceres (about €590 a month for a 70 m² flat) and Lugo (about €600) are the cheapest cities we track. Source: idealista long-term rental listings, September 2026. Our guide to the cheapest cities to live in Spain adds hospitals, trains and weather.

How often is the newsletter sent?

One email a month, at the start of the month. A second one only if there’s an event or big news worth it. Never more.

Is this a forum or a Facebook group?

No. It is one email a month, and you can reply to it. Meetups will come later, city by city.

Is the MySpainVisa Community free?

Yes. The community is how people get to know MySpainVisa before they need help with their move. There is nothing to pay and no trial that turns into a subscription.

When do the meetups start?

We’re starting them city by city, beginning where most members live. There are no dates yet. Tell us your city when you join and you will hear first.

Do I have to live in Spain to join?

No. The community is for people already here and for people planning the move. When you join you can tell us where you live, or where you would like to live.

Will you take sides in Spanish politics?

No. Before an election we explain what each party proposes on immigration and on rules for foreigners, with the source for each line. We do not tell anyone how to vote.

Will you sell my email or send me sales calls?

No. Joining the community is not the same as asking for a consultation, so nobody will call you. We never sell or share your email, as our privacy policy explains.

Who is behind the MySpainVisa Community?

The MySpainVisa team, which has helped people move to Spain since 2010. Our immigration lawyers check anything about visas or tax before it goes out, but the community itself is about meeting people and knowing what is going on.

How do I unsubscribe?

Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and you are out, no questions asked.
