To apply for the North American Language assistants’ program NALCAP, there are some requirements you must meet, which include

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada. Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK and many other countries join the same Auxiliares de Conversación programme through their own application channel (the British Council in the UK).
• Hold a university degree, or be a university student in at least your second year when applications close.
• Send a signed motivation letter and a reference letter from a professor or employer dated no earlier than September 2025.
• Sign the programme’s health declaration and its acceptance of conditions (Annex I of the call). Hold a clean certificate for sexual offences, which can be requested at any stage. Former assistants who withdrew twice in a row, or left the programme after starting, are excluded.
• Spanish is not a requirement. Your level is scored as a merit.
• Be at least 18 before 1 January 2026 and under 45 on 1 January 2027 (Source: Spanish Ministry of Education, call for 2026-27, May 2026).
• Have a native-like level of English

How to get started with your Nalcap Visa?

Once you confirm you are eligible, you can apply for the applications open on an online portal known as PROFEX. However, you should note that you can only apply when the application period opens. For 2026-27 it ran from 2 to 30 June 2026 on Profex 2. If you have previously participated in the program, you may reuse the same credentials to access your PROFEX account.
You will be required to submit all the necessary documents, which include:

• A copy of the main page of your passport
• A copy of your academic certification
• A signed and dated statement of purpose written in English addressed to the Ministry of Education in Spain explaining why you would like to participate in the NALCAP program. Also, mention you have a native level of English speaker.

Now you can request for background check and get other necessary documents, including official translation and NALCAP apostille certifications. However, you should note that Spanish consulates do not accept background checks with over 90 days of validity when submitting the NALCAP visa application. Assistants get health, repatriation and liability insurance through the Ministry or the region. • Certificate of good health– Required whatever the length of your stay. A doctor’s certificate showing you do not suffer from any disease with serious public health implications under the International Health Regulations 2005.
• You should have proof of residence in your consular district- you must provide your home country identity card, voter registration card, or driving licence.

They should ensure a copy of their identity document, and any documents that are accrediting representation should accompany their application. • Visa fee- The programme is free, but the visa has a consular fee, plus a service fee where BLS handles applications. Check the amount with your consulate.

What is Spanish visa type D?

It is the long-stay Spanish visa for stays of more than 90 days.
